Discussion and possible action.
PRIOR BOARD ACTIONS:

BACKGROUND:
Residents of the New Salem community have recently inquired about the scheduled roundabout project at NC 218 and Love Mill Road. The right of way acquisition process recently began, although the project has been funded for several years.
Total cost of the project: $2.86 million
Schedule: ROW Acquisition recently began. Construction scheduled for the summer of 2027 and will take 8-10 weeks.
Money spent to date: Approximately $108,000 on design and right-of-way expenses.
Project information: The project was submitted by NCDOT as a safety project and received additional funds from the Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization (CRTPO). No Union County funds have been requested or committed to the project.
The all way stop (AWS) was installed as an interim measure since a roundabout was in the works. Traffic volumes show that the intersection is approaching the operational limits for an AWS and will not function in the future with growth in traffic volume. A roundabout is therefore recommended for the long-term treatment for safety issues.
NCDOT staff will be present to answer questions about the project.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
None.
