INFORMATION CONTACT:

ACTION REQUESTED:

Recognize Union County Water Utility Crewleader Jayme Hargett and Utility Technician Dominick Hamilton for receiving the Lifesaver Award.

PRIOR BOARD ACTIONS:

None.

BACKGROUND:

While performing a repair within the wastewater system in April, Utility Services Supervisor Matt Hargett was working in a manhole to extract a piece of PVC that was lodged in a sewer pipe. Per OSHA standards, Hargett was wearing a gas monitor and body harness and had tested the confined space for dangerous gases before entering. However, after entering the space, the gas monitor began to indicate dangerous levels of carbon monoxide. Following safety protocols, Utility Crewleader Jayme Hargett and Utility Technician Dominick Hamilton were monitoring the situation above ground. Recognizing the immediate danger, they acted quickly to pull Matt from the confined space. Once Matt was safely out of the manhole, they realized carbon monoxide levels indicated a lethal concentration of the gas.

On June 11, the County's Management Team joined Water leadership to surprise Hargett and Hamilton and present them the Lifesaver Award.

The Lifesaver Award is awarded to employees whose heroic actions result in saving someone's life.

FINANCIAL IMPACT:

None.
