BACKGROUND:
On Sunday, May 4, 2025, Sgt. Corey Williams, Deputy Sarah Tucker, Deputy Luke McWhorter, Deputy Nicholas La Sala, and Deputy Ian Barclay-members of the Baker Squad Patrol Division-were enjoying breakfast at Stack’s Restaurant in Waxhaw when they were alerted that a 78-year-old man was choking. The man was visibly struggling to breathe, and the deputies immediately jumped into action.
One deputy performed the Heimlich maneuver while the others coordinated the response, calling for EMS and fire assistance. Thanks to their fast and effective teamwork, the food was dislodged, and the man was able to breathe on his own again. Because of the deputies’ swift response, the man made a full recovery and did not require hospitalization.
The Lifesaver Award is awarded to employees whose selfless actions result in saving someone's life.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
None.
