BACKGROUND:
After decades of commitment to public safety, Union County Fire Marshal Kevin Rigoli and accelerant detection K9 Camden, are retiring together.
Kevin Rigoli, a veteran with a distinguished career spanning three decades, began his journey in public service in 1989 through the U.S. Army. Following service during Desert Shield/Desert Storm, Rigoli transitioned to civilian life and joined the Mineral Springs Volunteer Fire Department. Subsequently, he became an integral part of Monroe Public Safety before the agency split to traditional police and fire departments. With the Monroe Fire Department, he was promoted to Division Chief of the Fire Marshal's Division before leaving in 2015 to join Union County Government to serve as Union County Fire Marshal.
Since 2016, Rigoli has worked alongside yellow Labrador Camden, an extraordinary accelerant detection K9 trained and certified/sworn by the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF). Camden, born in August 2014, was initially trained as a guide dog for visually impaired adults but found his true calling in fire investigation. His partnership with Rigoli resulted in an impeccable record, responding to numerous fire scenes across multiple states, including critical ATF National Response Team activations like the QVC warehouse fire in Rocky Mount, NC, in 2021.
Rigoli and Camden have worked nearly 500 fire scenes across multiple states and been activated by the ATF numerous times.
Rigoli and Camden will bid farewell to their respective services, with Kevin's retirement slated for January 31, 2024, and Camden's on January 1, 2024.
