ACTION REQUESTED:
Recognize, receive, and appropriate $16,425 of additional Agreement Addendum funding for WIC Client Services, in the Community Support & Outreach Division's operating budget. (Budget Amendment #9).
BACKGROUND:
Exclusive breastfeeding is the normative standard for infant and child nutrition. It is universally endorsed by the world's health and scientific community as the standard way to feed infants and children. Breastfeeding provides immediate and lifelong nutrition and health benefits for both mother and child, as well as larger economic, environmental, and social benefits to families and communities.
The Women's and Children's Health Section of the US Department of Health and Human Services (USDHHS) has the goal to increase and sustain the portion of infants who are breastfed exclusively through age 6 months to 42.4% and who are breastfed at 1 year to 54.1%. Breastfeeding promotion and support are required components of the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC). The North Carolina WIC Program strives to increase the incidence and duration of breastfeeding among women enrolled in the Program. One of the most effective methods to support breastfeeding is the implementation and maintenance of the Breastfeeding Peer Counselors (BFPC) Program.
North Carolina receives special funding from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to build and sustain BFPC Programs in the local health departments. This year, our WIC BFPC Program was allocated $44,025 in funding from the Women's and Children's Health Section Nutrition Services Branch of the North Carolina Division of Public Health, an increase of $16,425 from last year.
