ACTION REQUESTED:
Receive as information an overview and updates on the WanaBana, Weis and Schnucks Brands Cinnamon Applesauce and Fruit Puree product recalls due to elevate lead and chromium levels.
BACKGROUND:
During a child lead poisoning environmental investigation conducted by North Carolina County and State Environmental Health staff, a food product (WanaBana Cinnamon Applesauce) was found to contain high levels of lead. The case investigation and public health response expanded rapidly to include Federal and International agencies. The information provided will give an overview and timeline of actions taken by public health regulators to identify the source(s) of lead and later chromium in certain food products in an effort to prevent further harm to the public.
