BACKGROUND:

Heart Disease is the number two leading cause of death in Union County, and we continually see higher rates of this chronic disease in the African American population. The American Heart Association has announced a partnership with BlueCross BlueShield of NC and Novant Health to fund up to $10,000 to communities to implement their ideas through mini grants to promote heart healthy environments, physical activity, and nutrition. This opportunity extends to organizations in our region, the Charlotte area (Mecklenburg, Gaston, and Union Counties). Non-profits, hospitals, senior centers, churches, & city and county governments have been invited to apply.

The Human Services Agency’s Department of Community Support and Outreach wishes to apply for this funding to provide a Cardiac Emergency Response Plan including placement of Philips HeartStart Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) at the Senior Congregate Meal Sites that currently do not have them in place (2 of our 4 sites: Marshville and Mineral Springs). Meal Site Managers will be trained by our Emergency Preparedness staff and annual monitoring of the AED Stations to ensure they are fully charged will be the responsibility of our staff. This project has the potential impact of benefitting over 40 Seniors and an additional 40 Staff and Volunteers daily, as well as the church congregations where they are housed. Our Health Promotion team will continue to focus on heart health, stroke, and hypertension, along with heart healthy meals and physical activity with their educational programs for these senior populations. These initiatives are aligned with our Community Health Assessment findings, Human Service Strategic Plans, and ongoing general health education promotion efforts. This grant opportunity was received on 8/1/24 and was due on 8/16/24. The requested grant funding is a total of $4,000. Notification of the award will be October 2024.

FINANCIAL IMPACT:

$4,000 of grant funding is requested. There is no local match requirement.
