ACTION REQUESTED:

1) Approve request to apply for the Edward Bryne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program, 2) upon award, authorize the County Manager to negotiate and execute agreements substantially consistent with this agenda item, and 3) upon receipt of the grant award, recognize, receive, and appropriate the awarded amount to the Union County Sheriff’s Office budget.

PRIOR BOARD ACTIONS:

None.

BACKGROUND:

Union County Sheriff’s Office is eligible to receive a grant from the Edward Bryne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program. Union County Sheriff’s Office will receive funding for $13,984. There is no match for the grant. We will use the grant funding to purchase Fisherbrand accuSpin Max+4L Benchtop Centrifuge Package for our Crime Lab.

The centrifuge is for separation of biological material into organic solvents that can be analyzed on the instruments. Being able to clean up samples better will save the county money because less maintenance/consumables will be required for other instruments.

The centrifuge will be used in the toxicology lab to help clean up blood samples so that more drugs/drug types can be identified on the instrument. It will also help in the production setting (allowing more samples to be processed in the same amount of time currently being spent). It will also be used to help with separations on seized drugs, where larger amounts of samples need to be tested.

Further applications can be applied to different matrices of biological samples that go beyond just blood testing.

Grant application will need to be submitted by October 22. Will have a start date of December 1, 2024.

FINANCIAL IMPACT:

None.
