BACKGROUND:
Union County Water is tracking water demand closely through the summer as it approaches available regular supply. UCW jointly owns the Catawba River Water Treatment Plant (CRWTP) with Lancaster County Water & Sewer District (LCWSD). UCW can use 20 million gallons per day (mgd) which is half of the facility's rated capacity. UCW also owns the Yadkin River Water Treatment Plant (YRWTP) which opened in February 2024. The YRWTP can treat up to 12 mgd. Between these two sources of water, UCW has a ready supply of 32 mgd of water available to our customers.

UCW leases 3 mgd from LCWSD at the CRWTP for use in emergency situations or in times of high system demand. This lease is in place until 2025.

Four charts depicting water use trends are provided. The first shows water usage over the last 2 years in blue. It includes a dotted red line for our normal supply as well as a solid red line which includes the 3 mgd from the lease, both increasing with the additional capacity from the YRWTP in February 2024. The second chart shows monthly water usage for June 2024 and includes average daily rainfall for the month as well. This chart shows the small amount of rain seen in June until June 30th and the effect of increasing system water demand. The third chart shows the impact of higher-than-usual temperatures on water demand. Water demand equaled the historic peak system usage (24.5 mgd) seen in June 2022 on June 25th after prolonged hot and dry conditions. The fourth chart shows the currently defined levels in UCW's Water Shortage Response Plan that would require additional water use restrictions. Because of the additional treatment capacity at the YRWTP, system usage is still well below the threshold to trigger a Conservation Stag...
