BACKGROUND:
The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) is part of the Human Services Agency’s Community Support and Outreach Department. WIC serves to safeguard the health of low-to-moderate income pregnant, postpartum, and breastfeeding women, infants, and children up to age five (5) who are at nutritional risk. The WIC program provides nutritious foods to supplement diets, referrals to health care, and education on healthy eating from specially trained WIC nutritionists.
Union County signs an Agreement Addendum (AA) with the State of NC to provide WIC services. The AA assigns all Local Health Departments (LHD) an expected average monthly participation rate and allocates associated funding for services provided. Any LHD with an average monthly participation above 100% of the base caseload assignment for the period of February and March 2024, as defined in the original 403-Agreement Addendums, received funding increases. Union County surpassed the 100% base caseload assignment, therefore WIC received $11,191 in additional funding. This funding will enhance the County’s ability to achieve WIC’s Special Supplemental Nutrition Program objective to provide supplemental nutritious foods, nutrition education, and referrals to health care for low-income persons during critical periods of growth and development.
FINANCIAL IMPACT:
Additional funding of $11,191 is awarded at 100% with no required County match.
