body

INFORMATION CONTACT:

Patrick Niland, Deputy County Manager, 704-283-3636

ACTION REQUESTED:

Recognize the following deputies for performing lifesaving actions to help a colleague who was choking: Lt. James Dennis, Lt. Matt Winfrey, Sgt. Steve Handcock, and Sgt. Jody Rutledge.

PRIOR BOARD ACTIONS:

None.

BACKGROUND:

On April 18, a lunch outing at a local restaurant turned into a life-threatening situation for Craig Greenlee, Inmate Health Nurse Supervisor, who suddenly started choking and aspirating food and water into his lungs. Greenlee immediately had trouble breathing. The deputies having lunch with Craig, Lt. James Dennis, Lt. Matt Winfrey, Sgt. Steve Handcock, and Sgt. Jody Rutledge, sprang into action without hesitation, ready to put their training to use.

On May 22, the County's Management Team joined Sheriff's Office leadership to recognize the heroic deeds of Lt. James Dennis, Lt. Matt Winfrey, Sgt. Steve Handcock, and Sgt. Jody Rutledge, and present them the Lifesaver Award.

The Lifesaver Award is awarded to employees whose selfless actions result in saving someone's life. Ironically, Greenlee, whose life was saved in this incident, was the first recipient of the Lifesaver Award in 2021 for saving a colleague at the jail who came in contact with a powdery substance, later determined to be Fentanyl, while processing mail.

FINANCIAL IMPACT:

None.
