PRIOR BOARD ACTIONS:

None.

BACKGROUND:

During the 2023 legislative session, North Carolina Emergency Management (NCEM) was authorized to implement the Local Emergency Shelter Capacity Grant Program, aimed at supporting facility upgrades to expand shelter capacity across the state. Union County is seeking funding through the FY 2023 Local Emergency Shelter Capacity Grant to enhance its emergency preparedness and response capabilities. The proposed project involves installing a generator at Sun Valley High School, which is designated as an emergency shelter during crises. By equipping the shelter with a reliable power source, this project aims to increase its capacity to serve vulnerable populations and ensure continuity of operations during emergencies and disasters. This infrastructure improvement will strengthen the county's ability to provide lifesaving shelter services, accommodate larger numbers of evacuees, and support community resilience in the face of unforeseen events. With the support of the grant, Union County seeks to fortify its emergency shelter capabilities, effectively safeguarding the well-being and safety of its residents during times of need.

FINANCIAL IMPACT:

Up to $1.5 million would potentially be received from NCEM in the form of a reimbursement. No cost share is required.
