BACKGROUND:

The Union County Human Services Agency’s Health Department is partnering with the Mecklenburg County Health Department on a program for Improving Community Outcomes for Maternal and Child Health (ICO4MCH). The program uses evidenced-based approaches in health services aimed at improving birth outcomes, reducing infant mortality, and improving the overall health of children birth to 5-yrs and encouraging effective reproductive life planning. Union County has been awarded $20,000 to use for the purchase of long-acting reversible contraception (LARC). LARC includes Nexplanon and intrauterine devices that are more than 99% effective at preventing unintended pregnancy for 3 to 10 years according to the chosen device. The LARC option is a benefit to uninsured and underinsured women in our county who desire long-term contraception or who have health conditions that prevent the use of estrogen-containing methods.

FINANCIAL IMPACT:

Union County is awarded $20,000 from the Mecklenburg County Health Department with no County match required.
