ACTION REQUESTED:

Recognize Deputy Fire Marshal John Helms rushing to assist a man experiencing a medical emergency at a restaurant.

PRIOR BOARD ACTIONS:

None.

BACKGROUND:

On Tuesday, February 6, while Helms was eating dinner with his family at a local restaurant, he noticed a man at a nearby booth who was in distress. He rushed over to the man's table and asked the man if he was choking. When the man nodded yes, Helms quickly called 911 and began performing abdominal thrusts. Although it was later determined the man did not have a blocked airway, he was in respiratory distress, which was a critical concern. Helms stayed with the man until first responders arrived.

Union County's Management Team recognized Helm's actions by surprising him with the Lifesaver Award on March 15, 2024.

FINANCIAL IMPACT:

None.
