Recognize Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chris Byrum for heroic actions to save a student experiencing a medical emergency.

BACKGROUND:
Union County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Chris Byrum serves as a school resource officer at Weddington High School. On January 31, 2024, Byrum was in the school cafeteria when a student frantically ran up to him while holding and pointing at his throat. Deputy Byrum immediately realized the student was choking. Using his training and experience, Byrum performed several abdominal thrusts, which successfully dislodged the food and cleared the student’s airway.
